Synopsis
On the 17th May 1943, nineteen Lancaster bomber crews gathered at a remote RAF station in Lincolnshire for a mission of extraordinary daring and high risk - a night raid on three crucial and heavily defended dams deep in the German industrial heartland. The raiders would have to fly across occupied Europe at a perilously low level and drop their bombs at a mere 60 feet above the water to destroy the dam walls. Eight planes never returned. À propos de l'auteur
Max Arthur is an author who specialises in first-hand recollections of historical events. He has worked closely with the Imperial War Museum to bring together two books in the Forgotten Voices series, Forgotten Voices of the Great War and Forgotten Voices of the Second World War.
Previous titles include The Manchester United Air Crash; Above All Courage; Northern Ireland: Soldiers Talking; Men of the Red Beret; There Shall Be Wings: The RAF 1918 to the Present; The True Glory: The Royal Navy 1914 to Present.
Prior to becoming a writer, he served with the Royal Air Force and for some years was an actor.

Of all the operations mounted by RAF Bomber Command during WWII none was more remarkable than the raid in 1943 on a series of dams servicing the Ruhr industrial area with power and water. It was also one of the most costly, with eight of the 19 aircraft from 617 Squadron failing to return ,with the loss of 53 aircrew. There has been much attention paid to this raid in books and other media, but this tells the story in a new format. It is made up of accounts from surviving members of 617 Squadron and records, technicians who prepared the impressive and innovative weapons specially designed for the mission, from those on the receiving end in Garmany. and eyewitness in Occupied Europe, as well as ground crws and WAFFs serving at the squadron base. The chronological format follows the selection of officers and men for the mission, their traning, at low level and at night, the development and testing of the weapons, which were being perfected almost to the eve of the mission, modifiying the Lancaster aircraft to carry it, measures to ensure pin-point dropping accuracy was achieved "on the deck" at night, Also covered is the celebration that followed the success of the raid and the despondancy at the loss of so many lives --- the bomb's inventor, Barnes Wallis, is said to have broken down in tears on learning that his idea for such a mission was bought at such high cost in young lives. The way Max Arthur compiled this oral history is inclusive of all who took part, from ground crews to top brass of the RAF, to those on the fringes or in support roles. And then there are the experiences of the Germans caught up in the flooding following the breaching of dams. This pattern of presentation produces a tension and reality seldom found in the written word.
