Paperback. Etat : Good. First Time (2000) by Lara Harte (Phoenix) ISBN: 0753810468 Condition: Used (slightly experienced, still emotionally dangerous) as sold by Crappy Old Books First Time is not just about one first time. It is about a whole chaotic avalanche of them: first love, first heartbreak, first big mistake, first terrible haircut you swore you would ?grow into,? and the first moment you realise that adulthood has arrived without instructions, a warranty, or a return policy. Lara Harte dives into that awkward, hopeful, occasionally mortifying territory where people are trying to work out who they are, who they want, and why real life never quite matches the rehearsals they?ve run in their heads. Expect bad decisions made with absolute conviction, conversations that go sideways, friendships that wobble, and the creeping suspicion that everyone else got a secret briefing on how to be a functioning human. This is the emotional terrain of the first serious everything: the first time you tell someone the truth and immediately regret it, the first time you lie and wish you had been braver, the first time you look back at your own behaviour and think, ?Ah. Yes. That was? a choice.? It is messy, funny, slightly painful and uncomfortably recognisable. If you have ever replayed a conversation in your head for three days, this book is spiritually about you. Your particular copy has made its way here via Crappy Old Books, the natural habitat of paperbacks that have already seen some things. You should anticipate: A cover with light rubbing and perhaps a faint crease or two, as if someone once shoved it into a bag in a hurry, on the way to an awkward rendezvous they were not sure about. A spine with a few honest reading lines, proof that at least one person ignored sensible bedtime in favour of finding out exactly how bad that decision was going to be. Corners that are gently softened, like the memory of a first crush: still vivid, but no longer actively painful. Inside, all the emotional car crashes and small triumphs remain intact. The pages still deliver every wince, every ?oh no, don?t say that,? every moment of quiet courage where someone does the hard thing instead of the easy one. The paper may have tanned slightly with age, but the feelings are fresh as ever. The only thing missing is perhaps the ghost of a previous reader?s sigh as they recognised themselves a little too clearly. Buying First Time in Used condition from Crappy Old Books is, frankly, thematically perfect. You are reading about life?s earliest disasters and attempts at grace in a book that is itself on at least its second go-round. Somebody else has already taken this journey, survived, and passed it on. Think of it as a hand-me-down rite of passage in paperback form. Perfect for readers who like their coming-of-age stories more honest than glamorous remember their own first times (all of them) with a mixture of nostalgia and second-hand embarrassment secretly enjoy shouting ?no, no, do not text them back? at fictional characters and then watching them do it anyway Adopt this Used copy of First Time and give it another shot at your shelf. The outside may be a little worn, but the inside is still full of feelings, bad timing and tiny, hard-won victories ? just like real life, only with fewer group chats and more turning of actual pages.
