«Mi è stato dato di fare esperienza personale delle "ideologie del male". È qualcosa che resta incancellabile nella mia memoria. Prima ci fu il nazismo, Quello che in quegli anni si potè vedere era già cosa terribile. Ma molti aspetti del nazismo, in quella fase, di fatto rimasero nascosti. La reale dimensione del male che imperversava in Europa non fu percepita da tutti, neppure da quelli tra noi che stavano al centro stesso di quel vortice. Vivevamo sprofondati in una grande eruzione di male e soltanto gradualmente cominciammo a renderci conto della sua reale entità. I responsabili facevano infatti molti sforzi per nascondere i propri misfatti agli occhi del mondo. Sia i nazisti durante la guerra che, più tardi, nell'Est dell'Europa i comunisti, cercavano di occultare all'opinione pubblica ciò che facevano […] Più tardi, ormai a guerra finita, pensavo tra me: il Signore Dio ha concesso al nazismo dodici anni di esistenza e dopo dodici anni quel sistema è crollato. Si vede che quello era il limite imposto dalla Divina Provvidenza a una simile follia. […] Se il comunisamo è sopravvissuto più a lungo e se ha ancora dinanzi a sé, pensavo allora tra me, una prospettiva di ulteriore sviluppo, deve esserci un senso in tutto questo. […] Ciò che veniva fatto di pensare era che quel male fosse in qualche modo necessario al mondo e all'uomo. Succede, infatti, che in certe concrete situazioni dell'esistenza umana il male si riveli in qualche misura utile, in quanto crea occasioni per il bene. Non ha forse Johann Wolfgang von Goethe qualificato il diavolo come "una parte di quella forza, / che vuole sempre il male e opera sempre il bene"?»

About the Author
Born Karol Wojtyla in 1920, His Holiness Pope John Paul II was ordained a priest in 1947. He was created a cardinal in 1967. He became Pope on 16th October 1978. Pope John Paul II has already published several monographs straddling theology, philosophy and social policy. He has written plays and poetry, a special account of his pastoral experience in Krakow and collections of sermons delivered in far-flung countries.
