The increasing interest in identity and ethnicity studies in social sciences has raised interest in the study of socio-spatial segregation. Paradigms and concepts that were introduced into scholarly debates on segregation on the one hand and new trends in different cities around the world, attracted a group of scholars from the commission on "Monitoring Cities of Tomorrow" to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of segregation. This volume is the result of two years' discussion on the issue, and presents 11 articles organized in three chapters. The first part investigates some innovative ideas concerning the study of segregation in cities that undergo globalization. The second part raises questions concerning the associations among segregation, poverty and policies, and the third part highlights patterns of segregation and desegregation in three countries - South Africa, China and Canada - each of them representing different aspects of multi-culturality and transformation.
