Synopsis
Monte Irvin is successful and a pillar of the establishment. He suspects his wife of having an affair and has her followed by a private detective to the apartments of a professional crystal gazer, who styles himself 'Sheikh el Kazmah', - the dream reader. It is known she entered with the aristocratic Sir Lucien Pyne and a Mr. Gray, but only Gray has been seen to leave. In fact, Sir Lucien and Rita Irvin, a former actress, are both drug addicts which requires them to keep 'exotic' company in order to feed their habit. When Sir Lucien is found murdered, the celebrated Chief Inspector Kerry of Scotland Yard finds himself attempting to untangle a web of decit, drug trafficking and interlocking mysteries. With several twists along the way, this is a first class detective story from Sax Rohmer, which also deals with a sinister attempt at widespread control through the drugs trade.

Biographie de l'auteur
Sax Rohmer was born Arthur Henry Ward in 1883. As a schoolboy he was interested in Egyptology and the occult; later he became fascinated by theosophy, alchemy and mysticism. After a brief stint in the City of London, Rohmer became a Fleet Street journalist. The publication of two of his stories in magazines saw the start of his career as an adventure novelist and to begin with Rohmer wrote under a variety of pen names. The sinister arch-criminal Fu Manchu was his most famous creation, appearing for the first time in The Mystery of Fu Manchu, and a hugely popular series followed. Several films were made about Rohmer's villainous creation: notably The Mask of Fu Manchu in 1932 starring Boris Karloff and featuring Christopher Lee in the Hammer productions of the 1960's.
