There are also accounts of rural famine, bereavement and the effects on families back home, and even the story of a woman who planned to kill her family to save them further suffering.

Richard van Emden is a writer and television researcher and producer specialising in the First World War. He continues to visit the battlefields each year and to interview the dwindling number of veterans. He was author of PRISONERS OF THE KAISER and THE TRENCH and co-authored VETERANS. Richard has worked on many documentaries including ROSES OF NO MAN'S LAND, GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND, VETERANS and THE TRENCH and was the historical adviser on HORROR ON THE HOME FRONT.
