The story begins when Moses Gambler, a waiter in a small town restaurant, serves a mysterious customer one day. Moses is a young man whose heart is filled with questions about the history of the world and how to live. When Moses serves Seraph one morning he is confronted by her on the question of happiness and the art of living. Seraph captures the attention of Moses with the questions she asks and peculiar phrases she repeats. After their first encounter, she gives him a book set in an allegory about Progress -- a new world created by an adventurous spirit named Worker, and the history of how the people live, and Worker's desire for redemption and restoration of light and happiness to a chaotic world. Upon reading the first few pages, Moses discovers the remainder of the book is missing. Struck by the unusual nature of the book, Moses meets Seraph at a popular coffee shop each week so that they can discuss the purpose of living and the strange events surrounding the book. After each meeting, Moses begins to learn more about the story of Progress and the way of Seraph.Shrouded in magic and mystery, Moses soon finds himself living in two worlds: the enchanted pages of the world of Progress and the enigma of Seraph. Along his search to unravel their mystery, he discovers a new meaning and feeling about his life and world. In the tradition of tales about the spiritual journey, Eat Like A Turtle, Walk Like A Penguin, Sleep Like A Dog is a story of a waiter in search of truth and meaning and the teacher who guides him along the way.

Since he was 11, Maurice Fleming has always been interested in stories of the occult and mysticism. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he read the works of mystics, visionaries, and seekers of truth. As a child, Maurice also had personal encounters with the beyond and searched for understanding through reading and visiting several enlightened teachers. While studying as a Ford Teacher Scholar at Emory University, Maurice pursued a license in teaching, but declined certification a semester before graduating with a bachelor's degree in literature. After he returned home, Maurice continued his interest in metaphysics and spiritual growth until the night of November 28, 1995, when he heard the phrases, 'eat like a turtle, walk like a penguin, sleep like a dog,' followed by verses of poetry, while lying in his bed. During the next six months, Maurice searched for various opportunities for travel. Desperate to leave home, he received through intuition and a healing book in a local library the idea to travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico without preparation. Leaving with little money, no job, and no home waiting for him, Maurice took a bus and ventured 2,000 miles from his native land. Upon arriving in the new town, Maurice lived in shelters, under bridges, in stranger's homes, on park benches, and in cars and trucks. Since high school, he has always been interested in the writing process as a way towards exploring the nature of consciousness. At the age of 28, Maurice brings his knowledge and experiences about the path of self-awareness and enlightenment. It was through his love for mystical experiences and moments of inspiration that Maurice has written his first book.Today Maurice lives in Santa Fe ('The Land of Enchantment'), and divides his time between studying, meditating, and writing at home. His writings have been featured in The Santa Fe Reporter and The Santa Fe Sun. He is presently working on a sequel to his first book.
