Across is the story of a 14-year-old boy who bikes across the United States. His great adventure takes him from Massachusetts to Washington State. Each chapter is like a short story with a surprise ending. This book is also a story about the effects of divorce on children. Steve, the boy in the story, leaves home to search for his real father, after his mother marries a man he greatly dislikes. Even though this is a fictional novel the story is very real. Ideas for the story came from the author's 80,000 miles of biking experiences, which include two trips across the United States with groups of teenagers. If you love the great outdoors, you will really enjoy this book. It will allow you to really experience the spirit of outdoor America.

Larry Lindsay has bicycled across the United States twice. One trip began in Seattle, Washington with a group of six teenagers, and another trip began in California with a group of 10 teenagers. Mr. Lindsay also enjoys backpacking, canoeing, scuba diving, and winter camping. When the author isn't enjoying the outdoors, he is at his teaching job, teaching high school ecology in Michigan.
