Throughout grade school, high school, and into college, before Randy Leffingwell veered into journalism and photography, he wanted to be an architect. His first year at the University of Kansas consisted of design, structure, and engineering courses. His admiration of architecture and architects continues to this day. He has been an enthusiastic, if irregular, rider for twenty years and has owned an American quarter horse. His wife Carolyn competed in hunter-jumper and equitation events for several years. They live in Santa Barbara, California.
