Synopsis

The 505th Parachute Infantry regiment was arguably the best parachute regiment to descend on war-torn Europe. Drawing on interviews with surviving veterans, oral history recordings, official archives and previously unpublished accounts by over 300 veterans, Nordyke brings the history of this regiment to immediate and startling life. Liberating the first town in France, spearheading the invasion of Sicily, jumping into Normandy as the only parachute regiment with combat experience, Naples-Foggia, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Germany - all these experiences are conveyed with immediancy and power. This is history as it was lived by the men of the 505th, from their coming of age in the regiment, through World War Two, the final victory parade up Fifth Avenue, and the legacy of having been part of an elite parachute regiment unsurpassed in the annals of combat.
