Throughout the book, Hastings expertly shifts perspective between French resistance fighters, the British Secret Service (who helped coordinate the French resistance from afar and on the ground), and the German soldiers themselves. He now writes regularly for the Daily Mail and Financial Times, of which he is a contributing editor, and reviews books for the Sunday Times and New York Review of Books. He has published 23 books. In 2012, Sir Max Hastings was honored with the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.
