Smith is the author of several dog books and has worked on the Dog Writers Association of America's newsletter, served on the board of the Cat Writers' Associate, and is a longtime member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. She lives on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington with her Kelpie mix, Nestle.
