Chow (psychology, U. of Regina-Saskatchewan) contends that the null-hypothesis significance-test procedure, an integral component of data analysis in empirical research, has been criticized for the wrong reasons. He says critics have attributed functions to it that statistics cannot nor should be expected to serve. He finds that the technique plays a limited though valid and indispensable role in empirical research, but that its most important role is to fill a pedagogical gap.
