Dr. Edward (Ted) Ball is Chief of the Division of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) at the University of California, San Diego. He is a Professor of Medicine and Program Leader for Translational Oncology at the Cancer Center. Dr. Ball's research has focused on the development and clinical application of monoclonal antibodies for the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia. He was the first to treat patients with acute myelogenous leukemia with monoclonal antibodies. He is currently focusing on the use of antibodies with clinical application in both acute and chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Gregory A. Lelek, Professional Patient, is currently being treat by Dr. Edward Ball at Pearlman Cancer Center at University of California at San Diego. He was diagnosed in June of 1997 with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). He began treatment of CML with interferon alpha 2 in Houston soon after at M.D. Anderson Medical Center. During this time, Mr. Lelek was actively involved in a matched unrelated donor search through the National Bone Marrow Foundation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In February of 1998, a bone marrow match was located. The transplant took place on June 26, 1998 at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Lelek has progressed slowly but successfully and is now cancer free.
