Synopsis

A detailed illustrated history of the Kongō-class battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The Kongō class—comprising Kongō, Haruna, Kirishima, and Hiei—were the oldest, smallest, and fastest battleships in Japanese service during World War II.

Originally designed as battlecruisers, Kongō was built in England before World War I, while the remaining ships were constructed in Japan and completed by 1915.

Extensively modernized in the 1920s and reclassified as battleships in the 1930s, these vessels became some of the most active ships in the Japanese fleet.

They saw action in major campaigns including:

  • Pearl Harbor
  • Midway
  • Guadalcanal
  • Leyte Gulf

All four ships were ultimately sunk by Allied forces before the end of the war.

This volume features:

  • Rare Japanese primary source material
  • Archival photographs
  • Line drawings and technical schematics
  • Detailed charts and data

An essential resource for naval historians and World War II enthusiasts.
