Jay Pridmore is an architectural historian who has written widely about the people and ideas behind the building of Chicago. His 1993 book Chicago Architecture and Design, coauthored with George Larson, is one of the city's most popular books about local architecture. Hedrich Blessing Photographers (also Hedrich-Blessing) was an architectural photography firm established in Chicago in 1929 by partners Ken Hedrich and Henry Blessing. The Chicago History Museum houses the archive of the first 50 years of photography (1929-1979). Hedrich Blessing collaborated with architects and designers both nationally and internationally. The firm was founded by photographer Ken Hedrich, who had studied at the New York Institute of Photography, and his business partner Henry Blessing. Blessing left the business in 1931 but it retained its name Hedrich-Blessing with its new partners being two of Ken Hedrich's brothers, Ed and Bill Hedrich who joined the firm in 1930 and 1931 respectively. Their brother Jack joined and was an administrator and president for 40 odd years. "Don't make photographs, think them" was a pronouncement that became the motto of the firm which became famous for its innovative architectural photographs capturing the spirit of buildings. For decades the tallest building in the world, the 110-story Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) marked a major step in exemplifying and defining SOM's belief that a building's structure should inform its exterior profile. The 4.5-million-square-foot tower was the headquarters for Sears, Roebuck & Co. from the time of its completion in 1973 until 1995, when the merchandiser relocated to suburban Chicago. The building's design, flexible floor plan, and iconic stature have made it a premier address for a host of companies. Today, the tower is well-maintained and remains a center of activity in Chicago's Loop. The Willis Tower (originally the Sears Tower) is a 110-story, 1,451-foot (442.3 m) skyscraper in the Loop community area of Chicago in Illinois, United States. Designed by architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), it opened in 1973 as the world's tallest building, a title that it held for nearly 25 years. It is the third-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, as well as the 23rd-tallest in the world. Each year, more than 1.7 million people visit the Skydeck observation deck, the highest in the United States, making it one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations. The facade is made of anodized aluminum and black glass. The base of the building contains a retail complex known as the Catalog. The lower half of the tower was originally occupied by retail company Sears, which had its headquarters there until 1994, while the upper stories were rented out. The structure was known as the Sears Tower from its construction until the naming rights were included in a 2009 lease with the Willis Group. Local area residents still refer to the building by its old name. As of April 2018, the building's largest tenant is United Airlines, which occupies around 20 floors. Other major tenants include the building's namesake Willis Towers Watson and law firms Schiff Hardin and Seyfarth Shaw. Morgan Stanley became the building's fourth-largest tenant in 2017.
