The need of a standard work on the Vaticanas the great centre of ancient and modern culture, suggested the idea of the present volume. The first step of theE ditors, when they entered upon their task over two years ago, was to secure for each division of their subject the writer who was peculiarly fitted above all others to do it full justice. Their next care was to arrange with these authors for the illustration of all those important features of the Vatican which arouse the interest and admiration of visitors toR ome. A large proportion of the photographs used were taken specially for the present work with the permission of the Vatican authorities, and not a few are of objects never before photographed. The large number and inherent value of these illustrations give a unique interest to the present volume. The names of the contributing authors are a sufficient guarantee as to the value of the text. Having entrusted the printing of this book toT heD eV inne Press a household synonym for artistic work theE ditors hope to have satisfied the most exacting expectation of beautiful book-making.
