Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Colville; David Burnett; Art Gallery of Ontario, McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto, 1983. Laid in is a brochure from The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) for a retrospective of Alex Colville's works, July 22 September 18, 1983, featuring the cover photo from this book. Born in 1920 in Toronto, Ontario, Colville moved with his family at age seven to St. Catharines, and then to Amherst, Nova Scotia in 1929. He attended Mount Allison University from 1938 to 1942, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He married Rhoda Wright in 1942 and enlisted in the Canadian Army in the infantry, eventually earning the rank of lieutenant. He took part in the Royal Canadian Navy's landings in southern France. He was then attached to the 3rd Canadian Division. In the army for two years, and because he was a fine-arts student, he was made a war artist in May 1944. Colville returned to New Brunswick after the war and became a faculty member with the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University. In 1973, he moved his family to his wife's hometown of Wolfville, where they lived and worked in the house that her father built and in which she was born. Alex Colville's work is found in many collections including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and the Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover, Germany. From the blurb of this book Alex Colville s memorable images some pastoral, some sinister, many controversial have earned him a reputation in this country and abroad that is granted to few artists. He is known as a realist, but the artist behind these highly charged, very personal works has an allegiance to no school, and remains aloof from the contemporary art scene in order to paint his own unique vision. This definitive study of one of Canada s foremost artists covers every aspect of Colville s career his early training, the years as a war artist, his rise to recognition, and the period of his full maturity. Lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume will long remain the most comprehensive and stimulating study of Canada s most famous realist artist. This large format book, 272 pages measuring 260mm X 245mm, is in near-fine condition. The dust jacket is in very good condition and is now in a protective mylar wrap. A cornerstone book on this Nova Scotian artist written by one of the foremost experts on Canadian art in Canada. This large and heavy book may require additional postage. N° de réf. du vendeur 2136b
