Biographie de l'auteur

Mavis Cheek was born and grew up in Wimbledon. When her daughter Bella was born shortly after graduating with a Distinction in Art, she began her writing career in earnest. Journalism and travel writing at first, then short stories, and eventually, in 1988, her novel Pause Between Acts was published by The Bodley Head and won the She/John Menzies First Novel Prize. She has published fifteen novels and her short stories are in various collections. Mavis writes a kind of women's fiction which acutely observes and understands what life can be like, taking everything on with vigor and, of course, a good sense of humour.

Patricia’s marriage of eleven years is over. Despite her doubts about the arrival of Brian, a dog who has become a father-substitute for her ten year old daughter Rachel, Patricia is more than ready for a fulfilled life as a single parent. But then the matchmaking begins. Even her most trusted friends are determined to provide her with potential lovers, all of whom she skilfully manages to avoid – that is until Roland, who is deeply unsuitable, arrives on the scene.
