Rage, resentment, envy, jealousy, and hatred-- these emotions seem to dominate our times. They rule our highways, our workplaces, our homes, and our hearts.
In this provocative book of essays, writer Garret Keizer considers anger in all its baffling forms. Poignantly aware of his own temper, and of his ties to a religion that glorifies meekness, the author looks at anger as a paradox in our struggle to remain human in the midst of an infuriating world. Interweaving personal anecdotes, mythological stories, sacred texts, and Keizer's insightful observations, The Enigma of Anger will prove a welcome companion for anyone who has ever wrestled with wrath-or wished to make better use of it.

Paper Back. Etat : Very Good. Read this one straight through or choose an essay at random. Episcopal priest and high school English teacher Garret Keizer saves his subject (and his reader) from the tedious and over-processed world of self-help literature by keeping his prose nimble, humble and humorous. Never does he take himself too seriously, yet neither does he fail to root out the dangers of unrecognized anger and the subsequent graces of that anger transformed. Keizer writes from personal experience (''I am a descendant of angry men'') but balances biography with plenty of literary and cultural allusion -- from George Herbert and John Donne to Bob Dylan, the Myers-Brigg, Hemingway, Homer and Aeschylus -- in much the same way as poet and spiritual writer, Kathleen Norris. Believing common ground is best achieved by digging ''as deep as possible into the ground of one's own particularity, which often includes one's peculiarity too,'' Keizer sifts out and assembles five categories of anger by which he orders his book: Anger in the Lord, Anger in the Head, Anger in the House, Anger in the Church and Anger in the World. And though he makes no claims at solving the underlying problem of anger in our lives, his essays quietly carry the redemptive force of Christ's command, ''Take up your cross and follow me,'' as well as the pregnant pronouncement of John Donne, ''An angry and passionate man will find zeal enough in the House of God to eat him up.'' Firm and unmarked, with minimal wear. N° de réf. du vendeur 243349
