Synopsis
Presents contemporary perspectives on some of the most enduring problems facing social studies educators. The first few essays focus on the purposes identified for social studies education in North America, providing background on disciplinary struggles to control the social studies, as well as ways in which state departments of education, textbook publishers, and other have influenced the curriculum. The next four essays examine social issues in the curriculum, with an emphasis on issues of diversity. Finally, six essays address the social studies curriculum in practice.
