It has taught me things that I did not know before, and it has challenged some assumptions that I have been too ready to accept ? assumptions about human beings and about the societies that they have constructed for their security and well-being. While its main subject is theatre, and in particular erotic theatre, it is also a study of changing social attitudes. I am now largely unfamiliar with the world of theatre through lack of time in recent years, but the world of films, with which I am familiar, has presented its direct parallels in the present century. While, unlike the stage play, the film is still controlled by censorship, I like to think that in recent years the creative artists have not found this unreasonably restrictive nor an intolerable burden. I now believe that the time has come to free the filmmaker as well as the playwright: after reading this book I am increasingly inclined to this view. John Elsom has contrasted the social sexual attitudes of 1890 to 1910 with those of 1950 to 1972 as reflected in the plays and other similar entertainments of the time. We can perhaps assess the first period in a reasonable perspective, but we have the disadvantage of not having lived through this time and are therefore without subjective impressions. We have lived through the second period, but all these personal memories may lessen our objectivity. As Sir Arthur Bryant once wrote, 'It is difficult for a man who travels over a range of mountains to determine which is the highest peak until he is some distance away." We cannot expect perfection in our judgement either way, but we can always learn and try to understand. We can start by trying to understand ourselves and our own sexual attitudes. As John Elsom says, "Our sexual behaviour is a Thread in a pattern. The pattern is ourselves.". N° de réf. du vendeur 003464
