Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of this substantial festschrift honoring Henry Guerlac, the influential historian of science and longtime Cornell University professor. Edited by Harry Woolf, the volume contains fifteen scholarly essays by historians examining major developments in science from the early modern period through twentieth-century physics. 363 pages, illustrated, with a frontispiece, bibliography of Guerlac's writings, and index. Bibliographic records confirm the 1981 Cornell first edition and pagination. The collection is arranged around several broad themes: the Chemical Revolution; science, society, and the Enlightenment; scientific institutions; structure and function in early modern science; and modern physics. Subjects include Lavoisier's theory of gases, the defeat of phlogiston theory, Lamarck's chemistry, Laplace and religion, Newton and mechanism, the Royal Society, the Paris Academy of Sciences, the development of crystallography, quantum physics, Millikan's cosmic-ray research, and the supernova of 1054. Contributors include J. B. Gough, Carleton E. Perrin, Roger Hahn, Margaret C. Jacob, Marie Boas Hall, Thomas L. Hankins, Robert H. Kargon, and L. Pearce Williams. Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Good dust jacket. Dark cloth boards remain clean and square, with a firm binding and only minor shelf wear. Pages are clean and bright, with no highlighting or marginal annotation observed. Small pencil notations and traces of erased pricing or inventory marks appear on the front free endpaper. Dust jacket shows general rubbing and handling wear, light toning and scattered soiling, creasing and small closed tears along the upper edge, wear and slight chipping at the spine ends and corners, and an old label-removal or adhesive mark near the upper-right corner of the front panel. Jacket remains complete and presents reasonably well despite the wear. An appealing scholarly collection for readers and institutions interested in the history and philosophy of science, Enlightenment studies, early modern chemistry and physics, scientific institutions, and the historiography of science. Guerlac was a major figure in the professional development of the history of science, and the breadth of contributors and topics gives this commemorative volume lasting reference value. Carefully packed for shipment with protective wrapping and a sturdy box. USPS Media Mail is available within the United States; expedited and international shipping may be arranged at additional cost. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policies. SCI 1b.
