The contributors, distinguished scholars in Brazilian history, assess and reevaluate the importance of Brazilian independence. They offer stimulating, revisionist, and sometimes controversial interpretations and provide a better understanding of modern Brazil and her role in Latin America. In an introductory essay, A. J. R. Russell~Wood analyzes all the preconditions and precipitants in the move toward independence, drawing comparisons with English and Spanish colonies in the Americas. Examining political factors, Emilia Viotti da Costa traces the creation of a Brazilian political conscience and the independence of Brazil from Portugal: while Maria Odila Silva Dias details the social, economic, and political repercussions of the establishment of the royal court in Rio de Janeiro. Stanley E. Hilton, in describing United States policy toward the newly emergent nation, challenges the traditional view by illustrating the distrust with which the United States viewed Brazil. Stuart Schwartz and Richard Morse explore important social developments of the late eighteenth century. Schwartz discusses the presence of a class of rural agricultors and the elitist politics which led to their virtual exclusion from the political process. Morse, on the other hand, concentrates on urban development and the growth of townships and cities in late colonial Brazil. The last two essays deal with the ideological and intellectual background of the independence movement. Manoel Cardozo suggests that once the structures of the ancien regime, which had provided Portuguese society with cohesion and strength, had been weakened and destroyed, Brazilian separation from the mother country was almost inevitable. Bradford Burns points out the role played by the intellectuals, the academies, and the Masonic lodges in providing an ideological stimulus for separatist sentiment and in transmitting to the masses the ideals of the Enlightenment in Western Europe.
