In addition, Egypt must cope with a neglected and deteriorating physical infrastructure as a result of past international hostilities that diverted investment. Despite these problems the Egyptian economy has considerable potential for long-term growth. There are prospects for earnings from petroleum, revenues from the widened Suez Canal, and rapidly increasing remittances from Egyptians working abroad. The realization of this potential, however, will require policy reforms and structural changes, since existing institutions and policies are not always appropriate for the new open-door policy and more market-oriented economy. This study is the most detailed examination of the Egyptian economy to appear since the mid-1960s, and the first to emphasize economic management and policy.
