Synopsis

In this study of the medical writings of Robert Boyle, the author argues that, in addition to his reputation in chemistry, Boyle deserves recognition for his strong medical interests. Drawing on both his published and his unpublished writings, Kaplan shows that Boyle's contemporary reputation was not restricted to chemistry: he was consulted for medical advice and shared remedies among his friends; he also accompanied the physician, Thomas Sydenham, on visits to patients. He also wrote in depth about the human organism, pathology and therapy and therapeutic action.
