This study argues that American students are receiving a mediocre education in mathematics and science, especially students from disadvantaged groups - the poor, ethnic minorities and young women. The author challenges the conventional view that only a minority are capable of mastering these subjects, and reviews studies, data and programmes to identify the causes of educational problems, as well as possible solutions. This educational discrepancy is seen as causing not just an inadequately trained workforce, but also a widening gap between the haves and have nots in society.
