hardcover. Etat : Acceptable. Stains to cover, page edges, and/or pages inside. Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Pages in good condition. Hardcover. English. See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Four splendid centuries of architec tural innovation carried building in northern Europe from the indigen-ous timber barn and framed hall to the dramatic evocation of space and light in the great cathedrals. Medieval Structure traces the de-velopment of the Gothic style. The author's approach is unique: he focuses not on Gothic decora-tion but on the logic and develop-ment of Gothic architectural struc-ture. Discarding the aesthetics of much art history, he analyses the problems faced by the builders and explains the interplay of tensions, force, and stress. He concentrates on the roof ('the essential element. No roof no building'), on which the best energies of architects and craftsmen have been lavished, and which has always been a major structural problem because it must be carried across a usable space in defiance of gravity. The book begins with a description of the most primitive building form, the simple hut, which in northern lands where wood was plentiful was made of framed timber, and around the Mediterra.
