Synopsis

[Zen Master Ta Hui] Cleary, Christopher (Translator) Swampland Flowers. The Letters and Lectures of Zen Master Ta Hui. New York, Grave Press, 1977. 20 cm x 13 cm. XXVII, 144 pages. Original Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. From the library of philosopher Graham Parkes. Ta Hui (1089-1163) was a 12th-century Chinese Chan (Zen) master. Ta hui was a student of Yuanwu Keqin (1063-1135) and was the 12th generation of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. He was the dominant figure of the Linji school during the Song dynasty. Ta hui introduced the practice of kan huatou, or inspecting the critical phrase, of a koan story. This method was called the Chan of gongan (koan) introspection (Kanhua Chan). Although he believed that koans were the best way to achieve enlightenment, he also recognized the teaching of Confucius and Laozi as valuable. Ta hui was a vigorous critic of what he called the heretical Chan of silent illumination (mozhao xie Chan) of the Caodong school (Wade-Giles: Ts'ao-tung; Japanese: Soto). (Wikipedia).
