Now Tommy is a patrolman on the small Farmer's Mound, Texas, force--although only a handful of his fellow cops know it. Tommy's udercover seems foolproof. It had better be, since Tommy has the unenviable job of penetrating the motorcycle gang possibly involved in a major drug operation that, because of upheavals in that dark world, has centered in Farmer's Mound. They're a small but murderous bunch, and initiation involves the gratuitous killing of a police officer--in Tommy's case, his friend Smoky. Smoky himself is the entire Farmer's Mound narcotics squad, but that's only part of it. In a department as small as this one, everyone does practically anything when necessary--right now its necessary. Aside from the drug problem, there's a murder at the town's only radio station, a dead body belonging to one of the hangers-on at the bike gang, a heartbreaking case of child abuse involving the little daughter of one of the police officers. Add to this the routine fun of holdups, burglaries, and domestic disputes. No wonder the cops are working overtime. When the bikers get suspicious of Tommy and attempt to deal with him in their particular cruel way, it is only with the help of a compassionate Licensed Practical Nurse at the local hospital--who also happens to be the police chief's daughter--that he is able to pull through and prove himself as a police officer. Martha G. Webb writes from a first-hand knowledge of her story, having been both a police officer and a resident of just such a town as the fictional Farmer's Mound. The result is a novel crime that is so real, peopled by characters so believable and involving, that the reader will be intensely caught up from the intriguing beginning to the thrilling and highly satisfying end.
