From Communist youth to religious dissident, from the Gulag and back again, Koenraad De Wolf tells the story of longtime Russian dissident Alexander Ogorodnikov, whose courage touched people from every walk of life, including famous world leaders like Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher. In the 1970s Ogorodnikov performed a feat without precedent in the Soviet Union: he organised thousands of Protestant, Orthodox, and Catholic Christians in a secret underground group called the Christian Seminar. When the KGB found out, he was sent to the Gulag, where he spent nine years, barely surviving the horrors he encountered there. After his release Ogorodnikov continued to fight for the freedom of religion which became a fact in 1990 and for a more humane society in the Soviet Union. He founded the first Christian Democratic party, the first non-government school, the first free soup kitchen for the homeless and the first private shelter for orphans, homeless girls and teenage mothers. Readers will be fascinated and inspired by De Wolf's authoritative account of Ogorodnikov's life and work.

Biographie de l'auteur :

Koenraad De Wolf studied history and art history at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and has published several books and dozens of articles. Since 2000 he has also been working as a journalist with the Belgian weekly Tertio.
