Mary Sheppard was born in Lewisville, North Carolina. She was educated in the public schools and Elon College. She is a widower with two sons and five grandchildren, the oldest eighteen, the youngest six. Mary plays bridge, enjoys entertaining, and has had a lifelong love of writing. She sold the first short story she ever sent off, then had a long dry spell with only an occasional article before publishing her first novel. Since then she has had five novels published, one of them winning the Sir Walter Raleigh Award, which is given for the best work of fiction by a North Carolina writer.
