A practical guide for the assessment of families at risk of child abuse. Bolton begins by reviewing the literature and theory of family violence and the process of bonding between parent and child. He develops an approach to the problem called the Family Resource Theory. He describes in detail every phase of pregnancy and infancy, raising points for assessment. Three predictors of family violence -- premature birth, unhealthy infancy, and adolescent parenthood -- are given special attention. Bolton goes on to show how to use his ideas in the practical assessment of real families.
