Trade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. First Tuttle Edition 2nd Printing 1970. 144 Pages. This is a re-publication of the 1875 First Edition by Charles E. Tuttle Co. The front cover has slightly turned-up corners. The original 1875 Edition was published by Henry M. Whitney and was 4,000 copies. Being particularly interested in books about Hawaii, the publisher is pleased and proud to present this faithful reprint of a quaint, informative, and nostalgic guide book published one year before Queen Victoria became Empress of India. Full-page ads touting another age, another time are included, as is the full-page picture of an Hawaiian dancing girl-not in the traditional hula skirt, but fully attired in a heavy pleated skirt extending well below the knees, a long-sleeved blouse fastened high at the neck, and boots which appear to have been designed for use in much colder climes (see inside back cover). The Western influence was quite obvious here. But custom, and especially that of fashion, often works in cycles, and today's brief attire as represented by the bikini is the accepted mode, the obvious Western innovation. It is interesting to note that in 1875 Hawaii had a court headed by His Majesty the King; a Cabinet composed of four ministers, not including a defense minister; a Privy Council of State; a Supreme Court, and dozens of government officers. Foreign consuls included four representatives from the United States. Striking features of Hawaiian life are presented. The guide asks: Is the cost of living high? Rents in Honolulu varied from 8200 to 8600 a year. Beef and mutton cost from 5 to 8 cents a pound; milk 6 to 8 cents a quart; a native saddle-horse 85 to 825; a cow 810; sheep 81 to 82; goats 50 cents to $1. N° de réf. du vendeur 22772
