Feel free to inquire for photos or more details. --- A memoir of the American ballerina, written with Larry Kaplan. The narrative follows Tallchief from her early devotion to ballet and her arrival in New York in 1942 at age seventeen, through her acceptance into the Ballet Russe and her long artistic partnership with George Balanchine, whom she married and whose muse and prima ballerina she became at the New York City Ballet. The account offers detailed descriptions of her roles in Balanchine's The Firebird, The Nutcracker, Orpheus, and Sylvia, among others, together with recollections of working alongside Igor Stravinsky. Tallchief chronicles the doings of her fellow dancers at the New York City Ballet, the annulment of her marriage to Balanchine, and her later career, including an involvement with Rudolf Nureyev. Passages recall the subtlety and detail of particular movements and the shape of individual musical phrases. Written with Larry Kaplan, a frequent contributor to Ballet Review.
