No defects noted to book and has the appearance of a book never used. This book reproduces in one volume all the known portraits of Wild Bill Hickok, together with a selection of photographs of his family, his friends, his foes, and the places that knew him. Hickok's lifetime (1837-76) coincided with the invention, development, and proliferation of photographic art. As early as 1858 he was having his image caught by the camera, and by the turn of the century pictorial visiting cards of Wild Bill were everywhere available. The author's brief biographical essay, and the information with which he presents the 168 photographic plates, make The West of Wild Bill Hickok an informative picture book. Of all the Old West figures whose images eventually found their way into our popular culture, none was better known than Wild Bill, and the author believes that he was one of only two famous gunfighters (the other being Bat Masterson) whose lives resembled the legends that followed them. According to William W. Savage, Jr., , the myth of Wild Bill is a personification of the man: Wild Bill may be William S. Hart or Gary Cooper, Richard Dix or Howard Keel, or, if you were a video kid, Guy Madison. But myth draws its significance from the perceptions of history, and Joseph G. Rosa has been careful to remind us that the scenario has a basis both grim and complex. If we are to understand the attraction of the myth, it must be from the perspective of James Butler Hickok's own milieu. Rosa knows more about the subject than anyone else, and he is the best available guide for our excursion through the camera's eye. The author is the 1979 winner of the Edgar Langsdorf Award for Excellence in Writing. N° de réf. du vendeur 10436
