35th Anniversary Edition SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Brown cloth slipcase, H 24.75cm x L 16.75cm; lightly soiled; small discolored patch to bottom panel; seams are solid. Both hardcover volumes, H 23.5cm x L 15.75cm, without dust jackets (presumably as issued). Brown faux leather spines with vibrant gilt stamping; white woven cloth boards with some soiling. Dark brown top edges. #134 of 500 hand-numbered copies with author's signature "Bell I. Wiley" on special leaf bound-in between ffep and half-title of THE LIFE OF JOHNNY REB volume only (i.e. "Billy Yank" issued without similar limitation-signature leaf). Interior leaves are bright and clean. Bindings remain fairly crisp. Set was issued in commemoration of the original 1943 publication of "Johnny Reb" by Bobbs Merrill who also first published "Billy Yank" in 1952; as the two books obviously compliment one another several sets have been issued over the years. A leading scholar regarding the social history of the Civil War whose work remains much admired today, Bell Irvin Wiley (1906-1980) earned a Ph.D. from Yale University and served as professor of history at the University of Mississippi (1938-1943), Louisiana State University (1946-1959), and Emory University (1960-1974).
