Francis Warrington Dawson (born Joseph Austin Reek in London in 1840) emigrated to the United States in 1861 on the CSA steamer Nashville in order to join the Confederate service. He soon decided agiant naval service and enlisted in the artillery and was promoted to the rank of captain in April, 1864. First published in 1882 it is the only memoir by a British citizen who saw active service in both the Confederate navy and army. Dawson utilizes his skill as a journalist to write descriptions of his experiences on the blockade runner Nashville, with the Army of Northern Virginia, and as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. He gives an eyewitness account of the wounding of General James Longstreet and of major battles, including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg.
