This is the first linguistic study of a single state. Based on first-hand testimony provided by North Carolinians themselves, it is a unique historical study of the English language in the state from the earliest preserved records dating from the seventeenth century to 1860, showing not only what is distinctive about Tarheel speech but also making a valuable contribution to the history of American English generally.
