The editors have culled official records, diaries, newspapers, correspondence, governors' papers, and numerous other sources to collect original documents that detail the social, economic, political, and military aspects of the state during the war. In contrast to other Civil War works, the emphasis in this volume is not on the military perspective but rather on the larger issue of the societal costs of such a conflict. Institutions and individuals were sorely tried by the events that were directly or indirectly related to the war. Churches and schools faced spiritual and financial decline; men, women, and children struggled to acquire the barest necessities of life. The commentary accompanying each chapter provides a brief narrative account of the war that complements the documentary history. The editors have provided a sober account of the intense human and economic suffering endured by North Carolina during this period and also have created an awareness of the immensely complicated political realities of wartime North Carolina. The state's geographic diversity produced wide differences in sentiment concerning secession and the war, but Governor Vance's attitude toward the Confederate administration revealed a strong anticentralism that continues in North Carolina to the present day. Through it all he was a staunch defender of North Carolina's sovereignty, and this seems to have been based on the clear perception that North Carolina was not only asked to subjugate itself to a cause and system in which it had less than total belief but also that, in the final analysis, North Carolina gave far more to the Confederacy than it received in return.
