Synopsis
Hobart demonstrates how Malebranche's theories of truth, ideas, and intelligible extension were formulated under the influence of mathematics and how these theories conflicted with the assumptions and patterns of thought needed for traditional substance philosophy and natural theology. The conflict produced inconsistencies in key concepts--necessity, infinity, being, faith, and reason--rendering any reconciliation between science and religion intellectually unattainable.

Particular attention is given to Malebranche's treatment of necessity, infinity, being, faith, reason, and the difficulty of reconciling the emerging mathematical sciences with inherited religious and philosophical assumptions. Condition: Original red cloth hardcover appears square and sound, with light shelf wear visible at the exposed spine ends. Interior pages appear clean and unmarked in the supplied photographs, with mild age-toning. The original red dust jacket remains present and generally bright but shows rubbing and edge wear, a vertical tear extending downward from the upper edge of the front panel, additional short tears and creasing along the upper edge, and chipping and small losses around the spine head and upper corners. Rear panel has lighter rubbing and edge wear. A sound and attractive scholarly copy despite the jacket damage.
