Danny Lyon, who was the first staff photographer for the Atlanta-based Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the early 1960s, tells the compelling story of how black and white young people forged one of the most successful grassroots organizations in American history. His pictures, taken in the early 1960s, and his text, written thirty years later, chronicle the southern civil rights movement at the height of its power.
