Synopsis

Paulo Freire was born in 1921 in Recife, the port city of Brazil's northeastern coast that has more than its share of hunger and poverty. As a young man, influenced by the Christian Personalist movement, he became passionately committed to the poor and their struggle to better themselves, economically and educationally. The literacy program he developed for the University of Recife made him internationally famous and helped to in- spire his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed. He is currently a consultant to the World Council of Churches in Geneva.
This present book is an introduction to the life and ideas of Paulo Freire. It is particularly useful to general readers and educators in the United States where Freire's work is less well known. It provides an overview of his educational theories, of his emphasis on problem-posing and consciousness-raising for the poor. It draws parallels between his work and the movement of liberation theology in the Churches. Denis Collins is director of education for the California Province of the Jesuits. He did re- search for this book at Ohio State University, Washington, D.C., and Mexico City.
