Synopsis

This new work lists over 1,200 classical and operatic recordings in the compact disc format in a system whereby the individual titles are graded for their appropriateness to specific types and sizes of libraries. The preface describes the care and handling of compact discs and differentiates between this medium and those recordings made in the old, analog, fashion. The introduction contains a precis on criticism but is largely devoted to evaluating numerous recording soloists, ensembles, and singers. The main portion of the volume covers over 160 composers whose works are important in constituting a nuclear library collection of 'serious' music.
