A specialist in hymnology and eighteenth-century British literature and religion, he has published books and articles on John and Charles Wesley, Isaac Watts, Sabine Baring-Gould, Stephen Foster, Arthur Seymour Sullivan, temperance and gospel song, and the relationship between literature and hymnody.
