Synopsis
An essential reference work for all oriental rug scholars, collectors, dealers, and Islamic art historians, this is the first comprehensive bibliography written in English on the oriental rug and carpet literature, beginning with the first publication on oriental rugs in 1877 and including all known publications in any language published through 1992. OBannon has attempted to identify all single publications, including reprints of articles from journals and periodicals on this topic—2,875 separate entries in all.
The bibliography is divided into three major categories: Carpets; Islamic Arts and Textiles; and Maintenance, Care, and Related Books, with general and geographic subdivisions. Related topics include wool, dyeing, looms, technical aspects of weaving, and the history of oriental carpets.
Numbered for easy reference, entries are listed alphabetically by author and include standard bibliographic information and brief annotations. Titles of non-English language publications are transliterated into English. There are several cross references to geographic areas, tribal weavings, exhibitions, basic reference works, and private and public collections of oriental rugs.

À propos de l'auteur
George W. O'Bannon (Cornell, Stanford, international relations, Middle Eastern studies), editor and assistant editor of Oriental Rug Review, a bi-monthly journal of oriental rugs and textiles, from 1983 through 1991, is an independent consultant and appraiser of oriental carpets. An internationally recognized authority in this field, he has written and spoken extensively on this topic, and his articles have appeared in numerous publications. He is the author of The Turkoman Carpet and several exhibition catalogs.

An excellent and extensive bibliography of works in English on oriental rugs and carpets, and on other Islamic arts and textiles relevant to the study of such rugs and carpets. Coverage extends to those countries that were at one time wholly or partly within the Ottoman empire, so including works on rugs from Persia, India, Central Asia, Afghanistan, China, East Turkestan, Tibet, the Caucasus, Anatolia/Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldavia. The bibliography is principally of separately published works (books, catalogues and offprints) but includes some periodical articles. The details provided for each entry are: author(s), title, place of publication, publisher: year of publication; language(s); number of pages, type of binding, size in centimeters and inches; number of colour and black/white illustrations; line drawings; maps; colour quality; technical data; and an annotation which often combines description of the work with some evaluation of its merits.
