Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. Raphael; text by James H. Beck, Professor of Art History, Columbia University; Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1976. One of the Library of Great Painters series. From the blurb Raphael, among the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance, stands unchallenged. A brief career, abruptly ended after less than two working decades; a meteoric success, starting with provincial altarpieces and portraits and ending with commissions from the Pope; a style of painting and a personality that never ceased to amaze and delight the public. Raphael came to Florence in 1504 at the age of twenty-one. There he found the acknowledged genius of the time, Leonardo da Vinci, working in near collaboration with the fiery young sculpture-painter Michelangelo. This book has 146 illustrations, including 48 hand-tipped colorplates, some of which are foldouts. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), now generally known in English as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central, and the largest, work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. This large format book, 180 pages is in near-fine condition as is the dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. The only minor faults with the book are a one-inch stain on the first free endpaper and a slight darkening of the top of the pages. The text and plates are all in fine condition. This is a high-end production, typical of Abrams. This large and heavy book may require additional postage. N° de réf. du vendeur 24115b
