Synopsis

The distinguished U.S. Military Academy suffered a startling total of 308 defections from its esteemed ranks of Unionist cadets during the American Civil War. Rebels From West Point tells the story of this fascinating core group of officers who took the often heart-wrenching decision to 'go South', even after their education had sworn them to the values of the Union. Author Gerard Patterson examines how these choices were made, and the personal and professional consequences they held for the defector. Surprisingly, we learn that, in a number of cases, the defectors remained in close contact with their West Point brotherhood. The list of defectors is surprisingly distinguished. More famous personalities include: Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, A.P. Hill, James Longstreet and John B. Hood.
