In this book the play is about Bassanio, who needs money so that he can marry Portia, who happens to be a wealthy heiress in Belmont. Bassanio turns to his wealthy friend Antonio who says that he cannot help him as his ships are out in the sea though he can be the guarantor if Bassanio lends money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender.
