Having brought out Contatti 2 last year, the time has come to update Contatti 1 in order to consolidate its position as the best-selling Italian evening class course in the UK.

The Complete pack contains the revised editons of the Student Book, the Support Book and two audio cassettes.

The Student Book for the first part of the course introduces the key structures of the language over 14 thematic lessons with the emphasis placed firmly on communication. It is ideal for group and individual study and covers the skills and structures required at GCSE level. The changes for the second edition are not large scale, with exercises and realia updated where necessary, grammar explanations improved and some new photos and artwork. The use of English is kept to a miniumum after the first two units in line with current practice. References to the internet and modern technology are included in the new edition, and Lire have been altered to Euros ready for the big changeover in January 02. The familiar layout has been retained with small improvements to the design: new chapter openers and running headlines make for easier reference and box styles have been standardised.

The Support Book provides a key to all the exercises in the Student Book along with full tape transcripts and the two audio cassettes, recorded by native speakers both on location and in studio, feature a wide range of listening materials. For the second edition, the Support Book has been updated to reflect changes to exercises in the Student Book and the cassettes have been revised to take into account the changeover from Lire to Euro.

This complete pack is the first part of a new two-stage Italian course designed specifically for the adult learner. It takes the learner to an intermediate level of Itallian in 14 thematic units, including two revision chapters. Each unit is designed to provide material for two two-hour evening classes. While retaining the practical and realistic approach of GCSE-type courses, "Contatti 1" goes beyond immediate transactional language. From the beginning, the student is exposed to a range of vocabulary and is encouraged to develop the essential skill of gist comprehension. The use of English is kept to a minimum in the body of the book, but grammatical and vocabulary support is given in brief at the end of each lesson and in full at the back of the book. The emphasis is placed on practical, oral comprehension. The course comprises of a student's book and a support book/cassette pack. The support book contains tape transcripts and a key to exercises as an aid to the independent learner. Course elements are also available in a complete pack.
